Heavy-ion Pb+Pb collisions of √SNN = 5.5 TeV at the future CERN-LHC collider will produce more the 105 charged particles per event. Within the acceptance (−1 ≤ η ≤ 1) of the ALICE detector about 12000 tracks will be recorded, yielding information about particle type and momentum. The main instrument for particle identification is the Time Projection Chamber (TPC). The ALICE-TPC readout chambers (ROCs) will be conventional multiwire proportional chambers with cathode pad readout as used in many TPCs before. However, the high particle load puts severe constraints on the design parameters in terms of pad geometry and gas gain and leads to requirements that go beyond an optimization in terms of momentum and dE/dx resolution. In particular, the questions of rate capability and two-track separation in a high track density environment have to be considered. In this contribution we will discuss the design chosen and report on first measurements with a full size prototype of one ROC sector.
