The development of γ-ray tracking systems requires new large volume, segmented γ-ray detectors along with new signal processing algorithms and systems able to identify the γ-ray interactions with high energy and position resolution. “γ-ray tracking” is a concept introduced to increase the performances of the high resolution spectroscopic methods used in nuclear physics. By using this concept, a reconstruction of the incident γ-ray events will be possible by determining their scattering sequence utilizing the Compton scattering formula. For an efficient γ-ray tracking, the interactions of the γ-rays have to be accurately identified. For this purpose, digital pulse shape analysis methods were developed. In the present work, the main steps of the algorithm used to identify γ-ray interactions in segmented coaxial Ge detectors are presented together with the simulation results. After the segment signals are transformed using a “wide-band” orthogonal wavelet (WB4), a pattern recognition system is using as input variables the wavelet coefficients for the identification of the energies and positions of all interactions related to an incoming γ ray. The results of the simulations indicate a spatial position resolution of ≈1mm for single interactions and a good decomposition of multiple interactions.
