The HADES spectrometer including all major detector units, read-out, data aquisition and trigger electronics was tested during the commissioning beam time at SIS/GSI in November 2000. A 1.5 AGeV carbon beam irradiated a carbon target. Most of the reaction products entering the spectrometer were minimum ionizing particles. The first large-area drift chamber for the third tracking plane (MDC III), produced at FZ Rossendorf, was installed. During the beam time the detector working characteristics were studied and the performance of the read-out electronics was tested. A first estimation of the electron drift velocity, deduced from the drift time distribution and the lateral cell size, is presented. The data show a great number of event prongs. As we observed a momentum kick in the magnetic field, located between the second and third drift detector plane, of charged particles penetrating all three drift chamber planes we should be able to deduce a momentum resolution.
