A fast Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector (RICH) is the central device of the new dilepton spectrometer HADES at GSI, Darmstadt. It serves as a hadron blind trigger device for e+e− pairs in hadron and heavy ion induced collisions at 1-2 AGeV incident energy. The RICH consists of a C4F10 gas radiator, a spherical VUV-mirror, a VUV transparent CaF2 window, and a set of six multiwire proportional chambers with pad cathodes covered by a solid CsI photon converter. The photon detector is equipped with FE electronics based on the GASSIPLEX chip and a fast, multi pipeline data readout for the 27.000 channels. The RICH is operational since 1 year and has been used successfully in two beam times. We report on the detector performance and the results obtained for e± identification in heavy ion collisions. ∗ supported by BMBF (6TM970I) and GSI (TM-FR1).
