Structure and magnetic properties of [Fe(1ML)/Pt(1ML)] epitaxial superlattices on GaAs(001) — •E. Schuster, M. Doi, and W. Keune — Laboratorium für Angewandte Physik, Gerhard-Mercator-Universität Duisburg, 47048 Duisburg

Perpendicularly magnetized thin films on semiconductors are interesting for applications. We have prepared epitaxial [Fe(1ML)/Pt(1ML)]n superlattices on GaAs(001) by the MBE method. A clean (4x6) superstructure of the GaAs(001) surface was observed by RHEED, LEED and AES after Ar sputtering at 600C. RHEED demonstrated epitaxial growth of [Fe(1ML)/Pt(1ML)]n on a Fe(4.3Å)-seeded Pt(60Å) buffer layer. Oscillating behavior of the in-plane atomic distance was observed during the growth of the multilayer by RHEED intensity profile analysis. The L10-type layer structure was also confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Magnetic properties were investigated by conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy(CEMS). Although the CEMS spectra showed a rather large linewidth that indicates some atomic disorder, clear perpendicular magnetization was confirmed at room temperature. The spectrum was analyzed by a single magnetic phase using a distribution of hyperfine fields, isomer shifts and quadrupole splittings. Spectral analysis yields an average hyperfine field of 28T and an average tilting angle of the magnetic moments of ∼ 25 relative to the surface normal. Annealing effects for this superlattice also will be discussed.
