Structural investigation of the Mo6Se8 Chevrel phases grown on a MoS2 substrate by van der Waals epitaxy — •Ralf Severin, Thorsten Böker, Christoph Janowitz, and Recardo Manzke — Institut f. Physik, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Invalidenstrasse 110
Mo6Se8 belong to the so called Chevrel phases which show superconductivity persistent to high critical field. In the present study high purity Mo and Se was evaporated in a new van der Waals epitaxy (vdWe) system by an electron beam evaporator and a Knudsen type effusion cell, respectively. The deposited films on a MoS2 substrate were investigated by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and angular resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). As a first result two different stoichiometric phases were identified for different growth parameters; there are MoSe2 and Mo6Se8. The MoSe2 film shows the typical layer-by-layer growth mode in contrast to the island growth of the Mo6Se8. For structural investigation we present new angular resolved LEED studies, X-ray diffraction measurements and STM pattern of the Mo6Se8 films.
