Band structure calculations are presented,
supported by photoluminescence and optical absorption
measurements of the recently synthesized germanium sheet
polymer: polygermyne.
A direct comparison with the silicon based analog, siloxene,
is made possible by similarity of the structure and
synthesis of these materials.
The computationally predicted direct band gap of 1.7 eV
compares well with the observed optical absorption edge in
polygermyne.
