Anomalous Diffusion in Granular Flow — •Devaraj van der Meer, Ko van der Weele, and Detlef Lohse — Faculty of Applied Physics, University of Twente, P.O. Box 217, 7500 AE Enschede, The Netherlands

Granular gas in a row of N connected compartments is shown to exhibit anomalous diffusion, which goes as t1/3 rather than t1/2. This is explained in terms of a flux model. In the continuum limit N → ∞ this model yields a convection-diffusion equation of the KPZ type. Special attention is paid to the self-similar form of the profiles of diffusing clusters within the gas.
