The hydrodynamics of ferrofluids — •Hanns Walter Müller1 and Mario Liu2 — 1Max-Planck-Institut für Polymerforschung, Ackermannweg 10, 55128 Mainz — 2Theoretische Physik, Universität Hannover, 30167 Hannover
The structure of the hydrodynamics of ferrofluids is derived from fundamental conservation laws and symmetries. The result is a general ferro-fluiddynamics, which does not depend on microscopic details such as the magnetic relaxation mechanism (Brown or Néel), the angular momentum of the ferromagnetic grains, or whether the particles are of uniform size. The derived stress tensor and the magnetization relaxation are more complicated than assumed previously. Several new phenomena are predicted, earlier experiments are re-interpreted.
