Localizing light in random media: from absorption to gain * — •Ad Lagendijk — Van Der Waals-Zeeman Instituut — Universiteit van Amsterdam — The Netherlands

In strongly scattering media interference effects can strongly influence propgation of light. The longer the light paths that are possible inside a medium, the stronger the interference will be. In this respect absorption will diminish these interference effects. How about gain? We shall discuss experiments on samples with and without absorption, and samples with gain.

The experiments with media that exhibit optical gain, in addition to strong scattering, bring about a whole new class of complex media.
