Semiclassical description of the integer quantum Hall effect in higher Landau levels — •Nina Rohringer1, Nicolas Macris2, and Joachim Burgdörfer1 — 1Institut für Theoretische Physik, TU Wien — 2Institute for theoretical physics, EPF Lausanne
We present a semiclassical description of the integer quantum Hall (IQH) effect in higher Landau levels for high magnetic field. The smallness of the magnetic length lB compared to the length scale of variations of the disorder potential allows for a WKB-like expansion of the wave function in ascending order of the effective Planck constant (heff=lB2). Starting point is the projection method onto subspaces of individual Landau levels employing a Bargmann (coherent-state) representation. With this method we are able to extend the formulation of Girvin et al. to higher Landau levels and subspaces consisting of several Landau levels. An application of this formalism to the problem of weak levitation of extended states in the IQH regime will be discussed.
