We construct the Green’s function for finite-sized two-dimensional photonic crystals, consisting of clusters of circular cylinders, using the exact theory of multipole expansions. From this Green’s function, we compute the local density of states (LDOS) showing how the photonic band gap is formed when the size of the clusters is increased and how the photonic crystal structure affects the radiation properties of a fluorescent line source embedded in it. For frequencies within the photonic bandgap of the infinite crystal the LDOS decreases exponentially inside the crystal, and we find “hot” and “cold” spots for frequencies within the photonic bands. We also obtain the total density of states. Our method can easily be extended to three dimensions as well as to treating disorder and transmission/reflexion problems and, therefore, represents an important tool for the design and characterization of photonic crystal devices.
