Strong in-plane birefringence in dielectrically anisotropic nanostructured silicon — •Nicolai Künzner, Egon Gross, Joachim Diener, Dmitri Kovalev, and Frederick Koch — Physik-Department E16, Technische Universität München, James-Franck-Str. 1, 85748 Garching
Bulk silicon as a cubic crystal shows only a small intrinsic birefringent behaviour which is connected to the spatial dispersion of the refractive index. We report on dielectrically anisotropic nanostructured silicon exhibiting a very strong in plane birefringence. The difference of the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices exceeds the values of naturally birefringent crystals. Our birefringent layers can be used as efficient optical retarders and are useful for various physical and engineering applications.
