We numerically study the ground state properties and low-lying excitations of interacting electrons in quantum dots and quantum dot structures. We carry out calculations based on the Hartree-Fock approximation as well as on exact diagonalizations of the many-particle Hamilton operator. Specifically, we calculate the ground state energies, the charge distributions and the spin structure for particles in a parabolic confinement. For sufficiently strong Coulomb correlations the resulting addition energies show energy level bunching which can be related to reorgnizations in the shell structure of the dot. In addition to single quantum dots we also study anlogous questions for quantum dot molecules and more complicated structures.
