We study the behaviour of one-dimensional electron systems by magnetocapacitance measurements. One-dimensional confinement is obtained in metal-insulator-semiconductor heterostructures by means of field effect. Fork-shaped interdigital metallic gates are realized by electron beam-lithography. Phase sensitive measurement of the sample impedance allows us to study the thermodynamic and tunneling density of states. We observe a drastically increased tunneling resistance at the onset of the first one-dimensional subband with in-plane field. The behaviour in parallel and perpendicular field, which so far is not well understood, will be discussed.
