Microstructure evolution in nanocrystalline nickel during high-pressure torsion — •Alexander Zhilyaev, Gulnaz Nurislamova, and Ruslan Valiev — Institute for Physics of Advanced Materials, Ufa State Aviation Technical University, 450000 Ufa, K. Marx 12, RUSSIA
Recently attention of many scientists was attracted to nanostructured materials possessing novel physical and mechanical properties. Nanoscale microstructures can form during processing of nanostructured metals using different methods, e.g. condensation in inert gas atmosphere, rapid quenching, electrodeposition, ball milling, severe plastic deformation and during oxidation as well. A Novell technique developed recently, called high-pressure torsion (HPT), allows obtaining metals with ultra-fine grained microstructure. No detailed investigation of the influence of processing parameters (pressure, storage strain) on microstructure evolution has been done yet. This paper presents new results accomplished in ultra-fine grained (UFG) and nanocrystalline (NC) nickel using TEM, X-ray analysis and microhardness measurements. The microstructure evolution during annealing is compared between electrodeposited nickel (a mean grain size less 50 nm) and UFG nickel (200 nm). This work was supported by the EC (INTAS99-1216).
