Interfacial defect structures in nano- and polycrystalline films — •Ilya Ovid’ko — Institute of Problems of Mechanical Engineering, Russian Academy of Sciences, Bolshoj 61, Vas. Ostrov, St. Petersburg 199178, Russia

This presentation briefly reviews theoretical models that describe the specific structural and behavioral peculiarities of defects at interfaces in nano- and polycrystalline films. Interfacial defects essentially influence the outstanding properties of nano- and polycrystalline films (see, e.g., [1]), in which case results of their theoretical analysis are highly interesting for applications. This review focuses on theoretical models which describe the following: (i) Defects at interphase boundaries in nanocrystalline films and nano-scale multilayer coatings. (ii) Grain boundary defects in nano- and polycrystalline films. (iii) The role of grain boundary defects in plastic deformation and diffusion processes in nano- and polycrystalline films. (iv) Transformations of grain boundary defects and their effects on the high-TC superconducting properties of polycrystalline cuprate films. This work was supported by INTAS99-1216
