Interaction of potassium and chlorine in C60 fullerite thin films — •Sebastian Woedtke, Julia Brandt, Lutz Kipp, and Michael Skibowski — Institut für Experimentelle und Angewandte Physik, Leibnizstraße 19, 24118 Kiel
Expitaxially grown C60 films were exposed to chlorine gas under UHV conditions at room temperature. After a subsequent potassium evaporation onto the chlorinated samples the alkali-halogen interaction in the near-surface region was studied with photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES). While the K2p core level spectra and the C1s absorption spectra indicate the occupation of tetrahedral and octahedral fullerite lattice sites by K atoms, a noticeable increase of the Cl2p peak intensity can be observed. In accordance to K2p and Cl2p core levels which were measured at different emission angles an exchange process between adsorbed K atoms and interdiffused Cl atoms can be concluded. After several K deposition steps the formation of a chlorine adlayer on the C60 film surface and a distribution of alkali atoms in the C60 bulk structure can be observed.
