Synchrotron-based high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was applied to monitor odd-even effects in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of biphenyl-substituted alkanethiols CH3(C6H4)2(CH2)nSH (BPn, n = 1-4) on Au and Ag. These effects are generally related to periodical, odd-even changes in the packing density and the tilt angle of the biphenyl moieties, which occur at varying number of methylene groups in the aliphatic part in the BPn molecules. A variety of such effects at the S-substrate interface and inside the BPn films was found and considered in detail. Their occurrence and mutual correlation suggests that a BPn SAM represents a strongly correlated, highly ordered molecular ensemble. Analysis of the experimental data provides new information concerning the basic properties of both aromatic and aliphatic thiol-derived SAMs.
