Magnetic Properties of Fe/Ni bilayers on Cu(100) — •Xiangdong Liu and Matthias Wuttig — I. Physikalisches Institut der RWTH Aachen, D-52056 Aachen
Fe/Ni bilayers with various Fe and Ni thickness and different deposition sequence have been prepared by molecular beam epitaxy on Cu(100) substrates. Their magnetic properties have been investigated with the emphasis on the temperature dependence. The interface coupling between the Fe and Ni layer was found to contribute to an in-plane anisotropy. Anomalous behavior was observed in bilayers where the Fe layer thickness was 9 ML. Depending upon the Ni film thickness, an unusual temperature dependence of magnetization has been observed. The remanent magnetization of the 9ML Fe/10 ML Ni/Cu(100) sample jumps from 0 to a considerable value within a narrow temperature range when the sample is cooled through 200 K. In contrast, for the 9 ML Fe/15 ML Ni/Cu(100) film, a reduction in remanent magnetization is found when the temperature decreases below the same temperature. A non-monotonic temperature dependence of the coercive field has also been found in bilayers with a 9 ML Fe film. A model, which assumes an antiferromagnetic easy axis of the Fe film which is tilted away from the film normal and a considerable interface coupling between the Fe and Ni film, can explain the observed anomalies.
