STM study of Co growth on oxygen covered Cu(110) surfaces — •G. Boishin, L.D. Sun, M. Hohage, and P. Zeppenfeld — Institute of Experimental Physics, Johannes-Kepler-University Linz, A-4040 Linz, Austria
The growth of Co on the Cu(110)-(2×1)O surface and on the Cu-CuO stripe phase has been studied. Depositing submonolayer amounts of Co on the Cu-CuO stripe phase leads to the substitution of Cu atoms in the Cu-O rows. The excess Cu either forms Cu-islands on the bare Cu-areas or is incorporated in Cu-Co-O compound structures similar to the ones observed for Cu(110)-(2×1)O [1]. In addition, narrow Cu-Co-O-bridges connecting neighboring Cu-O stripes are formed. Cobalt films grown on the oxygen covered Cu(110) surface show different surface reconstructions, namely (2×1), (3×1) or (4×1), depending on the initial oxygen coverage. These (n×1) structures consist of atomic rows running along the [001] direction with every n-th row missing along the [110] direction. In particular, the (3×1) reconstructed Co film (with a thickness of about 11 ML) is found to be almost atomically flat in agreement with He scattering data.
