Directed layer-by-layer Assembly combining an electrophoretic deposition technique with a layer-by-layer self-assembly method is introduced for achieving lateral patterning of different types of CdTe nanocrystals. We demonstrate that by using this novel method a size- and thus color-selective lateral assembly of fluorescent CdTe nanocrystals on microcontacts is possible. Arrays of pixelated nanocrystal light-emitting diodes emitting at different wavelengths can be fabricated. This technique might become equally important for the realization of full color image sensors, biosensors and other molecular electronic devices.
