High charge storage in lithium perylene intercalation compounds — •Rainer Friedlein, Matthias Keil, Xavier Crispin, Sven Stafström, and William R. Salaneck — Department of Physics and Measurement Technology, Linköping University, 58183 Linköping, Sweden
Lithium-doped amorphous and polycrystalline films of the aromatic hydrocarbon perylene, formed by the process of low-temperature vacuum distillation, accept up to one lithium per 3.5± 0.3 carbon atoms. This level corresponds to the formation of the stochiometric compound Li6(C20H12). The high achievable Li/C ratios combined with a complete charge transfer from the lithium atoms to the molecules and a high binding energy of the dopant-induced valence band electronic states suggest a pronounced capability of small- and medium-size aromatic hydrocarbons for energy storage and battery applications. This property is based on the high electron affinity per carbon atom, which is shown to favor small- and medium-size aromatic systems versus extended graphitic networks.
