Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) is one of the materials
which are commonly
used in organic electronic devices like transistors and diodes.
We have studied the electronic structure of pristine and
potassium intercalated CuPc thin films using
photoemission spectroscopy.
The intercalation induced spectral changes indicate
the transfer of the K 4s electrons to the lowest
unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of CuPc which is
accompanied with a variation of the effective charge
at the Cu site. This shows that the LUMO in
CuPc not only is composed of N2p and C2p orbitals but
also has finite Cu3d character.
