The use of functional polymers for multi or full color passive-matrix displays is becoming more attractive as an emissive display technology. To compete with LCD, full color OLED displays have to achieve a similar color gamut with red, green and blue emitting polymers meeting all stability requirements under a variety of environmental conditions. Previous work (T.-W. Lee et. al., Adv. Mater. 12, No.11, 801 (00); H. Becker et. al., Phys. Rev. B56, 1893 (97)) addresses the influence of fabrication conditions on the electro- and photoluminescent properties. In our work, we studied the effect of thermochromism, viewing angle and polarisation on color properties of OLED devices based on soluble poly-(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) derivatives and the influence of brightness or ambient light. Furthermore, color shifts during driving at different temperatures were evaluated. Using a variety of techniques and modifying the device structure it is possible to distinguish between device effects (e.g. micro cavity effects) and intrinsic properties of the functional polymer itself.
