Morphology and growth of vacuum-deposited epitaxial PTCDA films on Ag(111) — •L. Chkoda, L. Kilian, M Sokolowski, C. Heske, and, and E. Umbach — Experimentelle Physik II, Universitaet Wuerzburg, Am Hubland, D-97074 Wuerzburg
Studies of structural, electronic and morphological properties of thin organic films on various substrates are both of basic as well as practical interest, e.g. for the preparation of organic light emitting devices (OLEDs). However, only a limited amount of information about growth and morphology of amorphous and crystalline organic films as a function of preparation conditions such as the deposition rate and the substrate temperature has been accumulated, even though they have a significant influence on the structure and the optoelectronical properties of organic films. In this work we present an XPS, LEED, and AFM study of the growth modes and morphology of vacuum deposited epitaxial films of 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA) on Ag(111). The variation of deposition rate (0.5-5 ML/min) and substrate temperature (220-420 K) during the deposition results in different growth modes and morphologies of the organic films, which will be discussed in a view of an epitaxial growth of thin organic films.
