Proximity effects in Vanadium-Chromium thin film Heterostructures — •Michael Hübener, Katharina Theis-Bröhl, Andre Bergmann, Kurt Westerholt, and Hartmut Zabel — Institut für Festkörperphysik, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, D 44780 Bochum, Germany.

Vanadium becomes superconducting at 5.3K, whereas chromium develops an incommensurate spin density wave (SDW) below 311K. The proximity in Fe/Pb/Fe trilayers has been studied extensively recently, exhibiting a non-monotonic suppression of the superconducting critical temperature as a function of the Fe thickness TS(dFe). In contrast, the V/Cr layer system attracted much less attention in the past. An earlier investigation indicates an anomaly of TS(dCr) which can be correlated with the onset of SDW magnetism with increasing Cr thickness. We have grown by MBE methods epitaxial V(110) films on Al2O3(1120) substrates with a Cr(110) cap layer. Structural investigations via in-situ RHEED, as well as X-ray scattering and AFM analysis confirm the high quality of the samples. We report low temperature resistivity measurements determining the transition temperature as a function of Cr thickness, in the range around the onset of the SDW.
