By means of magnetic susceptibility, X-ray diffraction
and inelastic light scattering we have carried out investigations on the
quantum spin system SrCu2(BO3)2. The existence of a structural
phase transition at T=395K and magnetic bound states at lower temperature
has been demonstrated. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility show
that the transition has an effect on magnetic interlayer coupling.
Furthermore, the effect of Ba- and Zn-substitution on this transition as
well as on the magnetic bound states has been examined. In comparison to
the pure compound the substitution leads to a suppression of the magnetic
bound states and an enhancement of the structural instability.
