A simple and robust setup for time- and space-resolved Michelson interferometry is presented, which is capable of measuring very small transient phase ( 3x10-2 rad) and amplitude changes ( 2 percent) with femtosecond temporal and micrometer lateral spatial resolution. The high measurement accuracy is achieved by using a 2D-Fourier transform reconstruction technique for interferogram processing. The aspects of optical image formation and processing as well as the physical interpretation of interferometric measurements are discussed.
