Hydrogen under extreme conditions — •Christian Toepffer, Paul-Gerhard Reinhard, Michael Knaup, and Günter Zwicknagel — Univ.Erlangen, Inst.f.Theor.Physik II,Staudtstr.7, 91058 Erlangen

While laser-driven shock experiments on deuterium performed in Livermore and at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory show a very large compressibility, recent magnetic pressure experiments at Sandia agree better with the Sesame equation of state for pressures up to 70 GPa. We performed Wave Packet Molecular Dynamics (WPMD) computer simulations of the Hugoniot at solid state density and pressures between 15 and 500 GPa with special attention to the antisymmetrization of all electrons. Below 70 GPa our results agree with the Sandia experiment, but we also find a large compression at higher pressures as measured in the laser-driven experiments. At the peak compression the pressure and the temperature are 150 GPa and 104 K, respectively, and the dissociated deuterium becomes strongly ionized.
