Dynamics of free-falling charged particle structures in an RF driven plasma — •Ciprian Zafiu, Andre Melzer, and Alexander Piel — Institut für Experimentelle und Angewandte Physik der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, Olshausen Str. 40-60, 24098, Kiel
The confinement of particles in a conventional capacitive rf-plasma is restricted to the area of the plasma sheath, near the lower electrode, due to the dominant influence of the gravitation force. This allows only the investigation of two dimensional particle systems in a horizontal plane. With the reduction or even the suppression of the gravitation, three-dimensional structures are expected. Here we present experiments where the gravitation influence is reduced by investigating free-falling particles in an RF-driven plasma tube. There is no stationary force balance on the particles. They drop at constant velocity under the influence of gravity, plasma electric fields, ion drag and neutral gas drag. A new and high time-resolution recording technique is implemented here in order to overcome the relatively low frame rate of a high-resolution video camera.
