The ZEUS C5 counter and the HERA Test Running — •Damir Lelas — DESY, Notkestrasse 85, 22607 Hamburg
The electron-proton collider HERA has just finalized the luminosity upgrade where new superconducting magnets have been placed inside the detectors to improve the beam focus. To monitor the HERA beams a scintillator counter has been placed close to the beam pipe in front of the rear calorimeter. It is read-out by photomultipliers. This counter is able to monitor background rates, bunch arrival times and the interaction point position which is essential for the data taking of the ZEUS detector, e.g. to be able to reduce beam related background in an early stage and to reduce possible radiation damage, and for the HERA beam steering.
In this talk I will present the design of the C5 counter and its read-out system and I will describe its role in the ZEUS detector. In addition, I will show some results from the first HERA test running.
