AMANDA Angular Resolution Studies — •Mathieu Ribordy — DESY Zeuthen, Platanenallee 6, 15738 Zeuthen
One of the main goal of the Amanda/IceCube detectors is the search for high energy neutrino sources, such as GRB or AGN, thought to be at the origin of the acceleration of the highest energy CR. The point source detection sensitivity is tightly related to the pointing resolution, since background contamination decreases with the latter.
Amanda was stepwise upgraded during the last years, increasing its sensitive volume as well as refining its point source resolution. Under certain assumptions on the conversion mechanisms of AGN/GRB, fluxes from a few point sources could be detectable with the present Amanda-II array.
We will present the quantitatively achieved angular resolution of Amanda-B10 and Amanda-II, compare Monte Carlo to experimental data, and finally extend the discussion to the expected sensitivity which could be reached with the future IceCube detector.
