The algorithms developed at the IUP allow us to extract vertical column densities of trace gas species from GOME data. One important species is BrO. It is responsible for the tropospheric polar ozone hole that is encountered during polar spring. It may also alter the oxidising capacity of the troposphere.
Sources of BrO are mainly the sea salt at high latitudes but also, as will be shown here, at mid latitudes there is a contribution of salt lakes. In this study we will focus on increased BrO abundances at bay areas at high latitudes, where we will show a comparison of GOME data to ground based measurements at the Hudson Bay. In addition we will present first results on the occurrence of increased BrO columns at South America, where many salt lakes can be found at the Andes.
