BREDOM - a global network of DOAS instruments for atmospheric research and satellite validation — •S. Fietkau, A. Ladstätter-Weißenmayer, A.G. Löwe, T. Medeke, A. Richter, F. Wittrock, and J.P. Burrows — Institut für Umweltphysik, Universität Bremen, Kufsteinerstr., 28359 Bremen

Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) is used to investigate worldwide changes of atmospheric trace gases (e.g. O3, NO2, HCHO) by ground based stations and satellite instruments (e.g. NDSC-stations, GOME, SCIAMACHY).

Ground based measurement sites exist mainly in polar regions and at northern mid-latitudes. It has been shown that tropical regions are needed for reliable scientific results on both atmospheric variations in these regions and satellite validation. Therefore, the Bremen DOAS measurement network (BREDOM) with three new instruments at tropical latitudes was proposed. Every BREDOM instrument will be able to measure in zenith sky and off-axis geometry to distinguish between stratospheric and tropospheric amounts of the measured species.

The proposed measurement locations of BREDOM and the realisation of the new tropical stations in Nairobi/Kenya and Merida/Venezuela are described. In addition, results of the existing BREDOM stations in Bremen and Ny-Ålesund are presented with a focus on the possibilities of the off-axis measurements.
