The Airborne Submillimeter Radiometer ASUR is a passive microwave receiver applying the heterodyne principle. It is operated on board an aircraft to avoid water vapor absorption. With its freqency range from 604 to 662 GHz it is capable to measure rotational lines of important stratospheric trace gases like Ozone, N2O, HCl, ClO and HNO3, among others. By analyzing the shape of the pressure broadened lines, vertical profiles of these species can be retrieved over an altitude range of about 15-55 km with a vertical resolution of 5-10 km in the lower stratosphere.
During the THESEO 2000 / SOLVE campaign ASUR was operated on board the NASA research aircraft DC-8, performing 23 flights between late November 1999 and mid-March 2000. Vertical profiles of the trace gases stated above were retrieved and allow to determine the variability of these trace gases inside the Arctic vortex and their evolution during the winter. Scientific results include diabatic descent of vortex airmasses derived from N2O observations, stratospheric ozone loss, chlorine activation derived from HCl and ClO measurements as well as denitrification derived from HNO3. Key measurements and conclusions will be presented.
