233Pa(n,f) cross section for accelerator driven systems — •Andreas Oberstedt1, Birger Fogelberg2, Franz-Josef Hambsch3, Stephan Oberstedt3, Elisabet Ramström1,2, and Fredrik Tovesson1,31Dept. of Natural Sciences, Örebro University, SE-70182 Örebro — 2Dept. of Radiation Science, Uppsala University, SE-61182 Nyköping — 3EU-JRC IRMM, B-2440 Geel

The fission cross section of 233Pa is of particular interest for reactivity calculations in accelerator driven systems (ADS) for nuclear power production involving 232Th-233U fuel cycles, since protactinium plays a keyrole as an intermediate nucleus in the formation of the fuel 233U. Neither previously known experimental values nor the fission cross section data in evaluated libraries (ENDF, JENDL) above the threshold were sufficiently accurate to meet the requirements of the IAEA. Despite the very short half-life of 233Pa of T1/2=27.0 d and the corresponding high β-activity, we recently succeeded for the first time to measure directly the fission cross section for neutron energies between 1.0 and 6.0 MeV [1].
