Strange decays from excited states of the nucleon — •Ralph Castelijns, J. Bacelar, and H. Löhner — Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut, Groningen, The Netherlands

The spectrum of excited states of the nucleon can provide essential information on the quark-gluon structure of hadrons. Complete information on various decay channels is mandatory, however some channels have hardly been explored. In particular, decays with many photons in the final state are difficult to access. We exploit the opportunity of a joint experiment with the TAPS photon spectrometer (528 BaF2 crystals) and the Crystal Barrel detector (1290 CsI detectors) at the tagged photon beam of ELSA in Bonn to study the barely known decay of excited nucleon states into a neutral K meson and a Sigma hyperon. This decay channel may reveal unknown resonances, in particular one expected near the production threshold. The experiment requires the measurement of six photons and a proton in the final state. We report on the feasibility studies and present first results from a commissioning experiment with photonuclear reactions on the proton.
