Charmonium Spectroscopy with Antiprotons — •J. Ritman — II. Phys. Inst., Gießen

GSI-Darmstadt has recently completed a conceptual design report for a major new international facility[1]. One of the main components is a storage ring that allows high luminosity in-ring experiments with cooled antiprotons between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. A multi-faceted physics program into the non-perturbative behavior of Quantum Chromodynamics is envisioned using p induced reactions. This program includes the attempt to develop a quantitative understanding of quark confinement, which is a unique feature of QCD. A promising method to learn more about quark confinement is to study the excitation spectrum of a bound charm anticharm quark pair. This system is heavy enough to apply perturbative methods, and deviations can be attributed to confinement effects. The physics potential of measuring charmonium states in pp reactions will be presented together with detailed simulations of the proposed detector’s performance. Specific emphasis is given to the identification of leptons (e±±) with high transverse momentum that are used to identify the charmonium states.
