The HERMES Recoil Detector Project — •B. Krauss, N. Pickert, and C. Vogel — Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg
Hard exclusive reactions and especially Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) have become a new and important research topic at HERMES. As the existing spectrometer has been designed for inclusive and semi-inclusive physics, it was decided to improve its performance by a barrel-shaped recoil detector around the internal gas target. This detector consists of three parts: Low energy protons that are characteristic of exclusive neutral meson production or DVCS are detected by a silicon telescope being installed in the vacuum of the target chamber. Pions or protons with higher momenta will be seen by a surrounding fibre tracker. Finally an outer layer of scintillators allows detection of π0 decay photons. While the recoil detector alone will provide a direct measurement of the 4-momentum transfer Δ to the proton, additional cuts can be applied on the overdetermined kinematics to improve exclusivity.
