TRIµP - Development of a Radioactive Isotope Trapping Facility at KVI — •A. Rogachevskiy , G.P. Berg, O. Dermois, M.N. Harakeh, R. Hoekstra, K. Jungmann, S. Kopecky, R. Morgenstern, R. Timmermans, L. Willmann, and H.W. Wilschut — Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen

At the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI) a new facility (TRIµP) is under development which aims for trapping radioactive isotopes in order to perform accurate measurements on fundamental interactions. A spectrum of radioactive isotopes will be produced in inverse kinematics reactions using heavy ion beams from the superconducting AGOR cyclotron. Among the systems of particular interest to the local group are certain Ne, Na and Ra isotopes. The reaction products will be separated from the primary beam in a magnetic device. A double recoil and fragment separator system has been designed to cover a broad range of possible production reactions. The isotopes of interest will be slowed down in a gas volume. Radial confinement will be provided by a radiofrequency quadrupole system. After neutralization the atoms will be cooled to below mK temperatures and stored in an atom trap (magneto optical trap). The research programme pursued by the KVI group includes precision studies of nuclear β-decays, through β–neutrino(recoil nucleus) correlations and searches for permanent electric dipole moments. The facility will be open for use by outside scientific groups.
