The isotope 233Pa plays an important role in accelerator driven systems for energy production using new and advanced fuel cycles involving 232Th and 233U, since it is an intermediate isotope in the formation of the main fuel 233U. In order to measure necessary cross section data, one needs samples with a sufficient amount of 233Pa, basically due to its very short half-life of T1/2=27.0 d. Earlier experiments with other actinides have shown that electrodeposition (or molecular plating) is a superior method to prepare thin and homogeneous targets. We tested this method for the first time successfully for protactinium using a 2,6 Dimethyl - 4 heptanol (DIBC) solution.
