Asymmetric Heavy Ion Collisions with FOPI — •Olaf N. Hartmann — Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt

The FOPI detector at GSI Darmstadt, is dedicated to identify charged particles in heavy ion reactions with almost full solid angle. Thus, it is able to determine properties of a heavy ion collision like the particle multiplicity, which is related to the impact parameter and hence is used for centrality selection, and the reaction plane needed for flow studies.

In asymmetric reactions with a light projectile on a heavy target or vice versa one wants e.g. to clarify ambiguities left from symmetric reactions, like the question whether the system behaves transparent or is just expanding. Furthermore, investigations of side- and elliptic flow should allow to determine the size of the fireball and help in solving the question whether squeeze-out is dominated by shadowing or by dynamics.

First results of the reaction 40Ca on 197Au at 1.5 GeV/u are presented and compared to predictions of the IQMD model.
