X-ray phase contrast imaging has been developed
at Mainz Microtron (MAMI) using transition radiation (TR) generated
by the external 885 MeV electron beam in a polymer foil stack. Phase
objects as polymer strings of (20-370) µ m diameter and thin
green leaves have been studied in poly-and monochromatic x-ray beams
at photon energies between 5 keV and 41 keV as a function of the distance
between the object and the high resolution Kodak and Agfa x-ray
films. The contrast of the images is very high although the
photoabsorption of the almost transparent materials is very low.
The main characteristic of the image is edge enhancement
which is largest where the density gradient has its maximum, i.e
at the interfaces between different features of the object.
