An Electrostatic Storage Ring at IAP — •Carsten Welsch1, Alwin Schempp1, and Horst Schmidt-Boecking2 — 1IAP, Goethe University, Robert-Mayer Strasse 2-4, D-60054 Frankfurt / Main — 2IKF, Goethe University, August-Euler-Strasse 6, 60486 Frankfurt / Main
An electrostatic storage ring may be seen as a cross between an electromagnetic trap and ’classical’ rings. Low costs, small size combined with mass independence of the necessary fields and good accessibility of the experimental sections are some of its interesting properties. Possible experiments with such a machine cover a wide range: Especially the advantage of being able to store heavy biomolecules and the absence of magnetic fields makes experiments possible one cannot cover with magnetic rings.
At IAP design studies have been made for a ring to store particles of energies up to 50 keV and a quarter ring section is presently being build up. The necessary optical elements are presented here as well as diagnostic elements and the control system. An overview of the beam dynamics calculation shows the high flexibility of the circulating beam and gives an idea of possible experiments.
