Few-body systems studied with internal targets in the NIKHEF electron storage ring — •Henk Bulten — NIKHEF, P.O. Box 41882, 1009 DB Amsterdam the Netherlands — Vrije Universiteit, 1081 HV Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Between 1994 and 1998 NIKHEF developed an internal-target facility in which (polarized) gas targets could be studied with the 700 MeV polarized electron beam. We aimed to perform a comprehensive study of the few-body nuclear system by measuring most relevant polarization observables in the quasi-elastic nucleon knock-out regime on deuterium and 3He, and by studying coherent and incoherent pion electroproduction in and below the Δ-resonance on these nuclei and on 4He. The latter experiments were using a recoil detector to observe the residual nucleus in the vacuum around the interaction region. We will discuss selected results obtained from this program, including an extraction of the electric form factor of the neutron from scattering data on deuterium and 3He.
