Dilepton radiation from a fireball — •Thorsten Renk1, Roland A. Schneider1, and Wolfram Weise1,21Technische Universität München — 2ECT, Trento

Dileptons are important probes in the context of heavy ion collisions, as they do not thermalize but rather escape at all stages of the fireball evolution, therefore providing a window to the early conditions where the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) presumably exists. Using a thermodynamically self-consistent model for the fireball created in a heavy ion collision, we calculate the emission of dilepton radiation during the fireball evolution and compare to SPS 40 and 160 AGeV data. For the QGP phase of the evolution, we use a quasiparticle model to obtain the thermal spectral function which determines the dilepton rate. In the hadronic phase, the spectral function is calculated using an improved vector meson dominance model combined with chiral dynamics. We find good agreement to the data. Predictions for the PHENIX experiment at RHIC are also given.
