The HERMES Polarized Internal Gas Target — •Mark Henoch — Physikalisches Institut, Univ. Erlangen-Nürnberg, 91058 Erlangen
The HERMES experiment (HERa MEasurement of Spin) at DESY uses the HERA polarized lepton beam in combination with the polarized internal target technique in order to determine the spin dependent structure functions of the proton and neutron via deep-inelastic scattering.
The HERMES target consists of a storage cell internal to the HERA lepton ring in which hydrogen or deuterium gas is injected from an atomic polarized source.
A sampled beam is extracted from the center of the storage cell to analyse the target gas for atomic polarization and atomic fraction using a Breit-Rabi-Polarimeter and a target gas analyser.
These values can be related to the average values inside the storage cell using sampling corrections.
The analysis of the average target polarization of the year 2000 with deuterium gas in a longitudinal magnetic holding field will be presented as well as preparations and first results of the change to a transversal holding field using hydrogen gas.
