Triaxial superdeformation (TSD) has recently been established in Lu and Hf isotopes in the mass 165 region. In this work we report on the first evidence for TSD in 170Hf. High-spin states in 170Hf have been populated at the Vivitron accelerator of IReS, Strasbourg, using the reaction 124Sn(50Ti,4n) at 216 MeV beam energy. Gamma-ray coincidences were detected with the EUROBALL spectrometer. A preliminary analysis of the coincidence data leads to an extension of all known normal-deformed (ND) bands in 170Hf to higher spins. In addition, one new ND band has been found. First results of the search for TSD in 170Hf revealed a band with similar characteristics as the TSD bands in neighbouring 168Hf.
