Production of Kaons and Antikaons in Proton-Nucleus Collisions near Threshold — •Werner Scheinast and Burkhard Kaempfer — Forschungszentrum Rossendorf
With the first proton beam at the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS at
GSI the Kaon Spectrometer KaoS was used for a systematic
investigation of the K+ and K− production in proton-nucleus
collisions. Double-differential cross sections were determined as
function of momentum and scattering angle for C and Au targets at
proton energies 1.6, 2.5, and 3.5 GeV. Additionally to K±
spectra also π± spectra were taken and the entire data
set has been analysed in a uniform way.
These data provide important information on the production of
strange mesons in one and two step processes. The data also allow
to extract information on the properties of strange hadrons in
nuclear matter at saturation densities.
Experimental results will be discussed and compared to various
model predictions.
